Valentine's Day Traditions

February 14 is Valentine's Day - a day when children give Valentine cards to their friends and adults send traditional greeting cards and Valentine's ecards. The story of how this tradition started goes way back in history to the third century when Saint Valentine was martyred because he would not give up his Christian religion. He sent a farewell note to his friend, his jailer's daughter to be exact, and signed it "From your Valentine". A few centuries later, the date became the day on which Christians honored this saint as St. Valentine's Day.

Valentine's Day became a day for lovers and on this day men and women sent anonymous notes to their loved ones. It became a day of celebrating love and friendship with parties and festivities of all kinds. Each country had its own traditions. In England, children dressed in adult clothing and went from home to home singing short love songs. In Wales, the tradition was to give gifts of wooden spoons decorated with hearts. Keys and keyholes became popular decorations meaning that the key would unlock one's heart.

Some Valentine's traditions throughout the world gave rise to common sayings that we use today. For example the saying "to wear your heart on your sleeve" means that you are telling everyone how you feel about a person. This saying dates back to the Middle Ages and the custom of choosing the name of your Valentine from a hat and wearing that person's name on your sleeve for a week. There are also superstitions associated with Valentine's Day. If a single woman sees a dove flying overhead on that day, this is supposed to mean that she will marry a sailor. It the bird was a sparrow, then she would marry a poor man.

A lady by the name of Esther Howland in the United States is credited with sending the first traditional Valentine's Day greeting card. In the 1880's the first greeting cards for this occasion were mass produced and sold in stores. Today there are all kinds of greeting cards for this special day with poems and verses devoted to love and friendship.

Valentine ecards were the first electronic greeting cards to be sent by email. This is a recent phenomenon spurred on by the use of email to send messages and communicate with people both near and far away. These first electronic greeting cards were first sent in 1995 depicting scenes of wildlife and nature. By 1996, the practice had become so common that Valentine's ecards were prepared by two sites on the Internet: Infobahn.com and Sony Entertainment. This started what has now become a very popular online industry with free and subscription sites you can visit for greeting cards for all occasions.

While the traditional greeting cards for Valentine's Day are still popular and retail stores do fantastic sales on this date, the wide variety of Valentine's ecards makes it possible to personalize the greetings in unique ways. You can add your own message instead of having to choose a pre-written verse. Many of the sites offer talking texts and accompanying music with animation that is guaranteed to evoke laughter and smiles.

With Valentine's Day fast approaching, now is the time to start your search for the perfect Valentine's ecard for your friends and family. There is such a selection available online that you will find one to suit the personality of everyone you know.

The Super Bowl 2005-2006: Iron Men and Girlie Men

Did you watch the Super Bowl? I slept through the third quarter because there is switch in this old man’s body that turns to “OFF” and there is nothing in God’s Universe that can take it off automatic. So I sleep for part of all football games. I just can't get that switch set to halftime.

I also miss part of each game because I read while I’m watching the game. If not reading, I’m doing a logic puzzle. If not reading or doing a puzzle, I’m out in the kitchen brewing something up. So I never see all of a football game. Not even the Super Bowl, the football game of all football games.

Despite my inattention, yesterday’s football game was to my liking. Too often the Super Bowl turn into a rout. But this was a match of endurance and strength and the Steelers pulled off a great victory.

Seattle should hold their heads high. They played great and they lost like men. They had some bad luck too. They actually lost by inches if you analyze some of the caught passes that didn’t count as receptions.

I live in the Northwest. Seattle is the preference up in these parts. In fact my son and his family live in Seattle. But we lived in Pittsburgh too. So, who ever won was okay for us. But I’m glad that Pittsburgh won because I think that the Pittsburgh coach is a fine family man that does not mouth filthy words to his players when they make a mistake.

He said that he wanted to win the game for that old fellow you saw hoisting the trophy before it was awarded to him. Seeing the coach hugging his daughters and kissing his wife was just grand. What a day! Well, I like Seattle's coach too. Two fine men.

At halftime we had to watch the Rolling Stones. They may be of the species that Arnold Schwarzenegger, the weight lifter and Hollywood actor turned California state governor, calls "girly-men." What the hell were they doing on that football field? Well maybe some of their gyrations could be used by running backs.

Customer Reviews

Incredible Value and Performance
The Samsung LN46A550 was at the top of our list for quite some time while we researched the quality and value of Flat Panel LCDs that were in the 42 - 46 inch range. While other TVs may have done slightly better in terms of price, the quality of Samsung televisions have surpassed even Sony in recent years as they consistently rank as one of the top brands. This TV is no different.

We were not in need of all the bells and whistles that are advertised on the later models of the Samsungs, such as the 120Hz refresh rate. This feature may smooth out intense sports action but as the human eye can only process a 60Hz refresh rate, the 120Hz will often tire your eyes out after viewing too long (this is why looking at an LCD monitor for a computer too long tires your eyes out).

As for its performance, we could not be happier. The Dark Night on Blu-ray played via a PS3 hooked up with HDMI 6FT / 2M Super High Resolution Male to Male Cable by Eforcity looked absolutely stunning. The 1080p resolution on this TV is incredible. People may complain about artifacts and pixelation while watching TV but that issue (which I have experienced) is not the TV itself. The fact that it can play Blu-ray movies at full 1080p resolution flawlessly indicates that the problem lies with the video source. The free HD channels I get as a Time Warner subscriber in NYC look amazing, but they do get a bit pixely sometimes during intense camera movement and action. This is also added to by the fact that even channels that are supposedly broadcasting in HD are using compression techniques that lower the quality on the subscriber's end. Unfortunately there is nothing to be done about it but wait for HD to become the standard. Everything still looks great and I do not regret this purchase in the slightest. Even the sound quality surprised me (it may not be 5.1 surround but it was better than I expected after reading people's reviews here).

Excellent TV
This TV is great, Ive had it for a month and a half with no problems whatsoever. The color/tone was perfect straight out of the box for me. It is also extremely quiet and doesnt give off any heat (I have it in a very small room and the temperature in there and the rest of the house is the same). I also really like the matte finish of the screen. This tv sits directly across the room from a window where the glare was tterrible with a normal tv but it is significantly reduced with this one. That is one way this tv is actually better than the A650, which has a glossy reflective screen.

I use it for over-the-air HD tv which looks great (if you have a strong signal on your antenna) and blu-ray movies, but the thing i use it for most is my Playstation 3. These two were made for eachother! The games look stunning even though most of them are only 720p. This TV doesnt have the 120Hz refresh rate like the A650 (which Ive seen because my parents have the A650). The 120hz refresh rate is nice for nature programs, animated movies, and sports but I actually do not like it for live action movies and tv shows. I feel like it looks like you're on the film set, which sounds good, but it really makes it look fake to me for some reason. Videogames currently only output at 60Hz so the 120Hz refresh rate makes no difference for them.

Overall I am extremely happy with this TV and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a nice HDtv, especially if your budget is a little tight.

Great hdtv
Great tv for a reasonable price. Excellent picture quality. We have a surround sound system and it truly is like being at the movies.

Bakugan Battle Brawlers Toy - Should You Let Your Child Play With These?

If your child is asking for a Bakugan Battle Brawlers toy, you're probably wondering what it is exactly! It seems like there is a new, hot TV show or toy out there that children fall in love with every other day. Still, Bakugan appears to be here to stay since it's been popular for quite some time now.

Basically, the Bakugan series started in other countries, but quickly moved to the United States once people realized how popular it is with children. It started here in 2007, and it's been increasing in popularity ever since.

The Bakugan brawlers in their toy form are like little, colorful marbles. When your child roles them on the magnetic strip, they pop open to reveal the warrior inside. There is a game that goes along with this, so it really works well if your child has a sibling or a friend to play with.

Unlike other toys that are related to TV shows you don't have to spend a lot of money to get into this one. These brawlers are available for well under $20 to get started. This low entry price means that it's easier than ever to collect these toys. It's really great when children have something fun to collect that they really enjoy!

If the Pokémon series is any indication, we can expect the Bakugan series to be around for quite some time now. Children really do seem to love the Bakugan Battle Brawlers TV show and toys that come along with it. So, should you allow your child to play with the Bakugan Battle Brawlers toy? This parent doesn't see any reason why not.

Any toy that allows your child to use their imagination to play is a good one in my book! The Battle Brawlers help them make a connection between their own imagination and what they see on the TV screen. If you hear your child talking about Bakugan and asking for the toys, sit down and watch an episode and you'll see that it is harmless and fun.

Of course, it's never a good thing to spend more money than you have to for Bakugan. There are definitely some retailers that mark the prices up a ton! I've found the lowest prices on the Bakugan Battle Starter Pack and other Bakugan Toys here at: http://bakuganstarterpack.com Hurry! I'm not sure how much longer these deals will last.
